Poetry can be difficult but, in general, a good poem is not at all hard to appreciate. Certain poems will speak to us effortlessly, and we might come to love them––or loath them! Certain poems will remain foreign to us, perhaps because they are far from our spheres of experience or interest.

All the same, one’s approach to a poem could escalate or deflate one’s experience of it. In this video, I suggest three ways to approach a poem––methods I use myself. These suggestions are meant to help make richer one’s exploration of poetry.

This video should especially be helpful to you if your interest in poetry is new. But you might also find the suggestions interesting and useful even as an experienced poetry reader.
